What the Çatalhöyük?

Summary

Google Drive is a great way for teachers to go paperless and also provides students with electronic documents that they can safely store in the cloud. Google drive also allows for collaboration in the classroom as well as beyond the classroom walls. This lesson consists an archaeology webquest. Google Docs is a lot like Microsoft Word. G-Docs is really cool though because it allows for more than one person to work on a single document at the same time! You also never need to worry about saving or losing your work – the document is automatically saved and can be accessed from any computer. Let begin by doing a quick activity centered around the Çatalhöyük. FYI: The Google Chrome web browser plays best with Google Docs. The lesson is intended as an intro to Google Drive for World History I students, but it can be easily adapted for any content area. Students will be introduced to Google Drive and then use this platform to investigate a website on the neolithic settlement, Çatalhöyük. They will need to discover the answer to questions that are presented in the Google Doc.

Developing – Teacher provides all of the resources for research and information acquisition. Questions were stated by the teacher directly in the Google Doc, however students were able to use the research bar within the Google Drive interface to discover links and photos from various sources were not dictated solely by the teacher.

Developing: There is evidence to the use of approved communication methods and digital tools and defined structures of communication within the classroom walls. This activity could move up on the TIP chart if the teacher shares out the documents with experts in the field of archeology and has them write back or share with the class their experiences in this field.

Entry: Since this was an introduction to Google Drive students were limited on their critical thinking and problem solving. The Google Doc could be easily adapted to include higher order thinking questions and justification of answers.

Entry: Students were provided with an assignment that emphasized student product over process. Since this was an introduction to Google Drive, teacher will be able to scaffold future assignments to be more creative.
