Geometric Poetry

Submitted by: Erin Casey
School: Tuckahoe Middle School

Summary

Combining Math and Poetry isn’t always the easiest thing to do, however….  Students were excited to try their skill at rhyme and other poetic devices during this math lesson.  Students had been studying geometric transformations.  As a demonstration of mastery over these concepts students had to collaboratively create four poems and find images that in some way illustrate the transformation described in the poem. Students were equally responsible for writing, reviewing each other’s work and finding images.  Everything was completed using Google Docs.

TIPC Ratings

While all strands of the TIPC are important and should be addressed, this lesson is focused on Creativity and Innovation. There are ways to increase the level of research and Information Fluency  but they may not tie as closely to the learning outcomes focused on in this lesson.

Approaching – Collaborative efforts began with self selection of partners and sharing the Google assignment document. Partners discussed and divided the assignment before working on their tasks. Students used the shared Google document to recorded the specific tasks for which each was responsible and to complete their assignment.

Approaching – Students applied digital tools to think critically and solve open-ended authentic tasks that required higher order thinking skills, creating poetry using their knowledge of the content. Additionally students found images that represented the terms to use as illustrations for each poem.

Target – Students used pre-selected terms from their study of transformations. Students were able to self select topics within the assignment parameters. This created a project that blended limited amounts of personal choice and technology. The project format was decided in advance to give students an experience with learning this particular tool. This lesson created a learning environment where students were engaged in creativity and innovation.
