Summary

Students participated in a three-day unit focusing on developing reading comprehension and critical thinking skills within digital resources. Reading is increasingly taking place through electronic devices (whether it be laptops, cell phones, e-readers, or tablets), students were challenged to use reading strategies in three unique scenarios that represent areas where people decipher information in the digital landscape. On day one, students learn to locate and comprehend transcripts from CNN Student News’ video news clips. Students then used the information from the transcript to develop five higher order questions based on the transcript information, requiring further research to answer. The best question by each student was posted to a class-shared Google Document for all to review. Then, students answered and discussed global recycling issues addressed in one of the online news articles to share their analysis of the issue and opinions.
