TIPC Ratings

Students used their environment to find patterns within the classroom and school. At the end of the lesson, students evaluated their peers’ projects to identify pattern types and strengthen any patterns with minor errors.

In an effort to manage the class as well as match students of various abilities, students worked in teacher-selected partners & groups. Students used a flipchart, i-pads, and the Pixie program to both complete their tasks and demonstrate their mastery of content. The patterns through physcial movement station and promethean board really challenged the kindergarteners to take the lead as well as allow themselves to be led. Some students were more receptive to delegation than others and a little aid had to be given every now and then. At the end of the lesson, students evaluated their peers’ projects on the promethean board to identify pattern types and strengthen any patterns with minor errors.

Students were challenged to move from concrete pre-conceived patterns to locating patterns in their environment that are not readily acknowledged or purposely placed; parameters for the hunt were limited and results varied greatly. Students had to manipulate potential patterns to form true patterns, in addition to revealing their thought processes and justifying their respones. When presented with more abstract patterns, students had to identify key components that made it pattern. At the end of the lesson, students had to apply their knowledge of patterns to safety both in the halls and on the streets. Students also responded to scenarios where patterns were removed from the halls and the streets.

Students created patterns at the patterns at the promethean board, necklace pasta, and color tile stations with given materials. All stations permitted students to create & analyze authentic patterns.
