Who Sank the Boat?

Summary

After a reading of Who Sank the Boat? by Pamela Allen, the students will research the design of boats through pictures, books, and websites. Given an assortment of materials, students will work with a partner of their choosing, to design and build a boat that will float in a tub of water and hold ten pennies. Student partners will brainstorm and collaborate their ideas for a boat design. Then partners will begin construction of their boat. When they have completed the boat, they will test it to determine if it will indeed float and how many pennies the boat holds before it sinks. Students will then use Pixie software to draw their boat and record a message stating such comments as how they built their boat, how many pennies it held, and any changes they would make in the design.

The teacher will photograph each boat and create a Voicethread on the web. Students and their parents will have the opportunity to record comments about the boats in communication beyond the classroom.
Students will complete a self-evaluation of their project as to criteria met, problems they encountered, and what they would do differently next time.

TIPC Ratings

Students used information and resources to accomplish real-world tasks. The Teacher guided students in observing boat hull designs from the past and present day in pictures, books, and websites.

Students worked with a partner to brainstorm, collaborate, and create an original boat from a variety of household items. Upon completion, students used Pixie software and Voicethread to communicate their project to parents and others beyond the classroom. Students completed an evaluation of the project including a simple rubric and ways that their boat could be improved.

Students used available materials to plan, design, and execute a boat that would stay afloat in a tub of water. Students used higher level thinking skills to plan and construct their boat.

Students successfully completed the problem of creating a boat that would float.
