Composing and Layering Ostinati

Submitted by: Erin Franklin and Jessica Jones
School: Echo Lake Elementary and Longdale Elementary

Summary

This lesson covers the concepts of ostinato (musical patterns) and layering techniques (adding or deleting one part at a time in a musical performance) while reviewing and applying music notation knowledge. In the lesson the students work in groups to compose and record an ostinato. The class also selects the instrumentation for each ostianto, and then performs together using the technique of layering to accompany a poem.

This lesson was collaboratively designed by Erin Franklin (Echo Lake Elementary) and Jessica Jones (Longdale Elementary) and taught at both schools. After the students recorderd the ostinati, we combined the recordings to create a collaborative compostion to share with our classes to demostrate how music notation allows people in different places share a musical experience.
