Earthquake in Virginia

Summary

Students were asked to show their expertise on geology and earthquakes using a real world experience. Students were told that an earthquake had just occurred in Virginia and that information needed to be given to the community. In small groups, students were to research and then determine the best tool to present their findings. Students were graded on the accuracy of facts/content, completion, teamwork, and communication.

This lesson is Target/Ideal in Research and Information Fluency as students researched various sources to find information they wanted to use in their project that addressed an authentic task. Students devised their own questions based on what product they wanted to create and what information they would need to include.


This lesson is Approaching in Communication and Collaboration. Students worked in self-selected groups to solve an authentic task and reflected on their roles. To become Target/Ideal, the lesson would need to shared with an audience outside their classroom.

This lesson is Target/Ideal in Critical Thinking. The students had to determine which digital tool would be the most effective to address the authentic task of delivering information to the public after an Earthquake.


This lesson is Target/Ideal because students have many choices of an end product. Students used the information they gained through their research and their own knowledge to create a new product.
