Travel with the Wild Things

Summary

Fourth graders are active learners in this cross-curricular experience. Students build clay figure “wild things” in art class, as a response to Maurice Sendak’s, Where the Wild Things Are. Subsequently, small groups create a story that links each set of wild things experiences, as they journey through real and imaginary worlds. A short video of their adventures is created using iMovie. Social studies, language arts, art, and technology are woven together to create a product that focuses as much on the process, as the product. The ultimate production will be shared with
younger students.

TIPC Ratings

Developing: Students worked together to create stories/scripts for their wild things movies.

Ideal/Target: As active learners, students reached and exceeded the target by combining critical and creative thinking skills, with making decisions about tools and resources. From start to finish, these important learning processes were embedded. They fine-tuned storytelling skills, as well. This activity was completely student driven.

Target/Ideal: Each student stretched him/herself to project and decide what resources/props/scenery to highlight, how to assemble sets, all while constantly evaluating how to disseminate the main message/story.

Approaching: Students worked together in their teams to create their own clamation stories which were later filmed and put together in iMovie.
