What Do Plants Need to Live?

Summary

Students will investigate and understand that plants have life needs and functional parts and can be classified according to certain characteristics. Key concepts include:
a). needs (food, air, water, light, and a place to grow)
Students will research the characteristics if plants. They will view a United Streaming Video, search websites that the teacher has provided, and organize their knowledge using a Kidspiration template. Students will create videos using PhotoBooth to create original videos and Pages to write creative stories about plants. They will also plant thier own seeds adn watch them grow!

Please keep in mind that these are students who have significant cognitive disabilities and are working on the alternate curriculum.

TIPC Ratings

The teacher provided websites for her students to use to discover facts about plants. This is age appropriate and in keeping with students that have significant cognitive disabilities and are using an alternate curriculum.

Developing: Students worked together in groups to create videos in Photobooth. They communicated through these videos that were shared with the class and wrote stories that were displayed in the hall to share with other students.

Approaching: Students are given mutiple opportunities to solve problems using project and problem based activitites. Students are also given the opportunity to form their own questions about plants before they begin thier research. The activities in this lesson are particualry limpressive since the students are working with cognitive disabilities.

Approaching: The teacher has provided a wide variety of activities for students to use to learn about plants. She has also given them the opportunity to be creative in their videos and stories and pictures. Students have used all of the knowledge they gained from their research to create their videos and stories.
