Our Class Melting Pot

Summary

Students worked independently and in groups to research the genealogy of the students in their class. They collected data on their families through interviews, photo albums, e-mails, and research sites such as ancestory.com. After meeting with small groups to share their findings and find commonalities in their research, students presented their research using a variety of charts and graphs. As a follow up to the lesson, students took pictures of each other and placed them on a map of the world according to their family origin.

This lesson scores in Ideal/Target in research and information fluency. After getting instructions on various charts and graphs, students select the appropriate tools to present their data. Students also use the information collected to accomplish a real world task.

This Communication and Collaboration lesson scores Approaching on the TIP Chart. In this lesson, students communicate and collaborate with other students of diverse cultural backgrounds. The teacher could raise the level by adding in some real time communication.

Students use multiple resources to plan, design, and execute real-world problems. This lesson could be higher in this area by allowing the students to develop their own open-ended questions.

Students apply critical thinking and research methods to create original work.
