Glance at a Golden Week 10.8-10.12

Fall is blowing through with full force! I hope everyone is safe and faired well during the storms that came through last night. Rest up and enjoy your extra day off, we’ll hit the ground running on Monday!

We are excited for our first field trip of the school year and it’s going to be a big one! Permission forms went home in student folders on Thursday for our trip to Luray Caverns and JMU. The form and fee are due by October 24th. Please let us know if you are interested in joining us as a chaperone. Chaperone fees will be collected after you are selected to attend.

A LOOK INTO ROOM 8:

Reading- We have moved on from fiction to focusing on nonfiction. The first skill we are discussing is nonfiction text features. Nonfiction text features help the reader to better understand the text and makes it more interesting! Some examples include bold text, titles, and headings. Click here to see all of the nonfiction text features we discussed this week (there are many!). Our focus for vocabulary this week was roots and affixes. Roots are the part of the word that carries the most meaning and affixes include prefixes and suffixes. Prefixes are added to the beginning of the root word to change its meaning and suffixes are added to the end of the root word to change its meaning. This topic will be discussed throughout the school year!

Writing- Students began working on the Papa John’s writing contest. This contest is based on the prompt: “How will you better your community by attending college?” This week we organized our ideas using a graphic organizer and began writing a rough draft. Next week we will finalize our writing and submit it to the competition! The students have an opportunity to win money AND pizza!

Social Studies- We learned about the economy of Henrico County. The students explored the importance of agriculture and natural/capital resources to the economy of our county both past and present. Next week we will move on to discussing the government of Henrico County.
