4th Annual “Night of the Warrior” Auction – Friday, March 16

4th ANNUAL “NIGHT OF THE WARRIOR” AUCTION – ONLY ONE WEEK AWAY ON FRIDAY, MARCH 16 AT THE BEAUTIFUL WESTWOOD CLUB, 6:30pm

The auction committee has secured many great items for your bidding pleasure to raise funds for participating organizations.  Now we need folks to buy tickets and attend!    If you haven’t purchased yours, please fill out the attached order form and return it to school with your payment.  Or, contact FCFA auction chair Beth Ann Norvell at  banorvell61@hotmail.com or 938-8066 to make arrangements for submitting your order.  While buying your own tickets, please consider taking a minute to forward the attached form to friends and family with a personal invitation to attend the auction.  

Great food, people, entertainment, shopping and a cash bar – everything you need for a fun night!  If you are unable to attend, monetary donations are gratefully accepted!  A head count for food purposes needs to be provided to the Westwood Club by next Tuesday.   Ticket orders will be accepted after this date, but it sure would make the job of the auction committee easier to have your order NOW!   See you there!

Broadway performer Frank Wright visited with CFA students

Broadway performer Frank Wright visited with CFA students

On Tuesday, March 6, Broadway performer Frank Wright visited with several students from the CFA Theatre and Musical Theatre curriculums.  Mr. Wright was in town performing as a swing in the touring production of the “Lion King.”  During his visit, Mr. Wright shared his experiences as an original cast member in the Broadway production of the “Lion King” as well as his experiences with auditioning and working as an actor in New York.  Later that evening, the CFA students got to see Mr. Wright once more – after watching the performance of “Lion King” at the Landmark Theatre, Mr. Wright was one of the cast members who participated in a post-show talk-back with our students.  The CFA students enjoyed meeting Mr. Wright –- they certainly asked some interesting questions – and they had a great time posing for photos!

Congratulations to CFA Dancers for a fantastic spring Dance Showcase!

We would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to our fabulous CFA Dance teachers — Ms. Fink, Mr. Colden, Ms. Ferrell — and the CFA Dance Students for the fantastic spring dance showcase “Music & Rhythm” they presented this past weekend (March 2-3, 2012).  The choreography was imaginative and amazing and the dancers did a great job in their performances.  We are very proud of our wonderful CFA dance teachers and students!

HHS Drama Club presents “Little Shop of Horrors”

Henrico High School Drama Club presents “Little Shop of Horrors”

Don’t miss the HHS Drama Club’s upcoming production of “Little Shop of Horrors” – performances are February 23-25 @ 7:30 p.m. with a 2:30 matinee on the 25th @ 2:30.  Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance.  Please see Mr. Ritter for advance ticket sales.

The Friday night show will be the “Feed a Teacher to the Plant” night so you will need to come and vote for your favorite HHS teacher to be swallowed by Audrey II!  The Saturday night show will be the Ultimate Gore night (blood, body parts, etc.) for a different “Horror” experience!! 

The production is directed by Karen Moody (CFA Lead Musical Theatre teacher) with Musical Direction by Morgan Day (HHS Chorus Director and CFA Musical Theatre music teacher).  Please don’t miss this opportunity – it should be a great show!

2012 Center for the Arts Scholastic Art Awards

Congratulations are in order for the CFA Visual Art students who were recently awarded Scholastic Art Awards.  We are very excited to announce that our talented students in the CFA Visual Arts program were recently honored by having their work selected in this year’s Scholastic Art competition.   Hosted by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, this is a highly competitive art show which was made more so by the addition of many more VA school districts this year.    Gold Key winners will have their work sent to New York to compete at the national level.

EXHIBITION 

If your student is a Gold Key winner his/her work will be exhibited at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Your student(s) work will be on display with his/her fellow Gold Key winner from February 18, 2012 – March 18, 2012.  Artwork may not be removed from this exhibition before the end date. For more information and instructions on how to prep and package your artwork for delivery and pick up please review the attached exhibition policy statement. Please note that Silver Key and Honorable Mention winners will not participate in the exhibition.

RECOGNITION

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts would like to honor your award winning student(s) at our Second Annual Scholastic Award Ceremony on February 18, 2012. The ceremony will be divided alphabetically: those recipient winners with last names beginning with letters A-M will take place from 10:30am-noon and recipient winners with last names beginning with letters N-Z from 1:00pm-2:30pm. All students are invited to a short reception from noon-1pm. Students will be allowed to bring up to four guests to this event. Gold Key winners will be recognized in order by grade and alphabetically during their respective ceremonies. Seats will be labeled at the front of the theater with the award winners’ name. Please be advised that guests may not sit with students. Honorable Mention and Silver Key students will receive their certificate via mail.

THE ALLIANCE

If your student is a Gold Key winner his/her work will move on to the Alliance for Young Artist and Writers national adjudication process, where he/she will be eligible for further recognition and scholarship opportunities. Students will not need to resubmit their work. The VMFA will notify Alliance of their candidacy. Adjudication of Gold Key works will take place in New York City and award winners will be announced on March 15, 2012.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and The Alliance for Young Artist and Writers are pleased to honor your student’s creative talents. Congratulations once again for doing your part to contribute to the Regional Scholastic Art Awards of 2012!

CFA Open House

CFA OPEN HOUSE – January 10, 2012

The CFA Open House will be held on January 10, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.  The Open House is a great opportunity for prospective students and parents to obtain information about the CFA!  Please help spread the word to any 8th grade student that you know who might be interested in applying to the CFA.

Drama Club Presents “The Complete Works of Williams Shakespeare”

Please don’t miss the HHS Drama Club’s upcoming production of “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) {revised}” on December 8-10, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. (there is also a matinee performance at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 10).  Tickets are $10.00 and are available for purchase at the door prior to the show.  Contact Ms. Hardy and Mr. Ritter if you have any additional questions about the show.

Congratulations to CFA students for a wonderful Visual and Performing Arts Showcase

Congratulations to all CFA students and CFA teachers for a very successful Fall 2011 Visual and Performing Arts Showcase!

Congratulations once more to our wonderful CFA students and CFA teachers for their fabulous Fall Showcase galleries and performances on Friday and Saturday, November 18 and 19!  We had a great turnout both Friday and Saturday night – so thanks to everyone who came to support our students.  We also want to give special thanks to the HCPS and HHS Administrations, the FCFA, as well as to the parents, relatives and friends of our CFA students – we can’t put on shows of this caliber without your help!

Finally, special thanks to the FCFA for their hard work in making these Showcases run so smoothly!  The FCFA is responsible for much of the “behind-the-scenes” work and we are truly grateful for their help!  Thanks to all of you for purchasing concessions and flowers from the FCFA – this helps to fund many student educational and scholarship initiatives.

Interest Meeting for Summer Governor’s School for the Visual and Performing Arts

Dr. Poxon, HHS director of the Center for the Arts, is holding an interest meeting for the Summer Governor’s School for the Visual and Performing Arts on Monday, October 24 at 4:00 p.m. in the auditorium.  All current 10th and 11th grade students interested in applying for the Summer Governor’s School for the VPA should attend. 

If your child cannot attend the meeting, she/he should contact Dr. Poxon, slpoxon@henrico.k12.va.us,  or come to the CFA Office for more information.

CFA students show you “How to Carve A Pumpkin”

Look for the October edition of “Student Zone” on the HCPS website – October’s edition will feature a “How to Carve a Pumpkin” segment and several Level IV Visual Art students will be featured in the production!  Congratulations to Harry Trinh, who carved the pumpkins; to Do Park, who narrated the segment, and to Dean Bryant, who demoed.  Congratulations!!
