Water Conservation – 5317

Summary

First 45 minute lesson – Students conducted research on conservation and ecology topics. Students listed 5 facts about conservation and ecology and then shared this information. Students started data collection on water use in their homes.
Second 45 minute lesson – After one week of data collection, students entered data on water use on a GoogleDoc form. The class results were displayed through the Googledoc spreadsheet and students answered problems using critical thinking and problem solving skills.

TIPC Ratings

The Information Specialist conducted a session on research and information fluency for the students. This session, as well as, the skills they learned in their grade level enrichment sessions on research and information fluency helped them determine which sources were valid and reliable. Students conducted their own research to find information relevant to the assignment. Students listed 5 facts about conservation and ecology, organized their research and shared this information with the class.

Students work individually to research and collect data. Communication and Collaboration was not a component of this lesson.

Students had to research, organize, assemble, present, defend and justify the data gathered for this lesson. This required higher order problem solving and critical thinking skills. In this lesson each student had to present their individual findings to the other students’ data collection in the class. This meant they had to be able to engage in conversations and ask meaningful questions of their peers to gain a full understanding of that student’s research and data.

The teacher provided an assignment that the students responded to and completed. Creativity and Innovation was not a component of this lesson.
