Traits of a Good Citizen

Summary

The object of the lesson is for students to recognize and demonstrate the character traits of a good citizen. After a discussion of what traits make a good citizen, students worked in small groups to create public service announcements that were shown on our televised morning announcements explaining some of the traits.

The lesson is in the developing category while the students are identifying the character words of a good citizen. Students are asked to use prior knowledge and peer support to create a list of 10 words. Conversation included prior knowledge from earlier lessons.

The lesson is in the developing category when the students work in loose groups by table to create their original service announcement. Students did not choose their groups, they were asked to work with the group assigned as per their seating arrangement.

The lesson is in the developing category. There were instructions and a time limit. Student groups used their prior knowledge to research their character word. They used each other for ideas to solve their creation problem.

The groups were in the approaching category. They were given a list of 10 words, they had to pick one and create their own interpretation of the character trait. The students showed multiple ways to represent any of the 10 character traits.
