General Information

All assignments fall into one of four categories: Participation, Classwork, Formative, or Summative.  When we are in the non-virtual classroom, these categories are weighted.  During virtual learning, the county has decided not to weight assignments.

Grading Threshold

The lowest score a student can receive is 50%.  Any score below 50% is adjusted to meet this threshold.  You may see a note indicating a score was adjusted to meet this threshold.  This is a manual over-ride process, so it may take up to a week to reflect properly in the gradebook.

Incomplete/Missing Assignments

Any assignment that is not submitted is listed as missing.  Those assignments can and should be submitted as early as possible.  There will be a score of 0 in the gradebook as a placeholder until the assignment is turned in.  Missing assignments will also be flagged for easy reference.  This is a manual over-ride process, so it may take up to a week to reflect properly in the gradebook.

Retakes

There are three types of assignments that can be retaken: multiplication tests, formative, and summative.  Other categories of work should only be submitted once.  Schoology often allows students to submit the work twice to prevent students from being incorrectly locked out of assignments on the first attempt.  In the event of multiple submissions, only the first grade will be recorded.

Multiplication Tests:

These are the only timed assignments that we give in 4th grade.  They cover skills we hope students mastered in 3rd grade, and that we expect are now automatic.  Because these assignments are timed, and because the goal is to master these skills, we allow students to retake the multiplication tests as many times (without a proctor) as they need to in order to score a 90% or above.  Any student that scores below a 90% should practice the difficult facts and retake that test to get a 90% or above.

Formative and Summative:

These are the traditional quizzes and tests.  There are typically one or two summative assignments a quarter, and up to nine quizzes.  Students are able to retake 1 of these assignments each quarter in each subject.  For example: they can retake 1 math and 1 science formative/summative in the same quarter, but not 2 math formative/summatives.

Please let me know if you have additional questions about the grading policy.  I know that it can be confusing, and am happy to help clarify.
