September 20

Back to School Night was a success — thanks for pretending to be your child for the evening and living a day in their shoes!  If you couldn’t make it last night, your child’s information when home in his/her folder today.

Please remember that Young Scientist money is due by Monday, September 30th.  We will have 5 visits from the Young Science program this school year in which we will explore magnets, 5 senses, shadows, and more!  You can pay online or send in a check payable to KES or cash.  The fee is $16.

This week, children learned about the letters “Nn” and “Tt.”  We did many activities with both letters and a highlight being reading the newspaper to find math in the news!  We used our handwriting books and focused on writing the letters in the correct formation — be sure to refer to the pink paper with the information on how to form letters when working with your child in their homework journals that you received at Back to School Night.  Next week, we will begin learning about the letters “Pp” and “Gg” as well as beginning our Reading Rotations.  Children will move about the classroom on their own in small groups and work independently.

We finished up our unit on colors.  Children brought home their color paper as well as their water bottle in which we mixed colors all week long.  For our Rainbow Day, children used the colors of the rainbow to make their names and we will be using them all year long in our classroom.  We also talked about America and patriotism.  Children learned about the Constitution on Constitution Day (September 17th) –we looked at a replica of the Constitution.  During our exploration of the document, children learned about quill pens and inkwells.  Next week, we will start learning about the season of fall!  I can’t wait!

We worked on sorting items in math this week.  Children sorted buttons by size, shape, color, and button holes.  We sorted shapes, noodles, color scraps and more.  We also read Jerry Pallotta books — he is an amazing author and helped us learn about sorting and patterns—which we will begin learning about next week!

We also continued to read stories from our Author(s) of the Month, Jan and Stan Berenstain.  We will be focusing on the Berenstain Bears from the rest of the month of September before we start to focus on Jerry Pallotta for the month of October.  He not only writes math concept books, but is the author of the new series ‘Who Would Win.’  He also has written mane ABC books.  We will be writing to him during the month of October in homes of a letter back!

Have a great weekend and be on the lookout for the Coyote Courier from Mrs. Patterson on Sunday evening!
