Welcome to 5th Grade! I am looking forward to being your teacher!

Students- I love trivia questions so here is one for you.  Name one of the only sports where the team with the ball is on defense.

Parents- To enhance our study of Social Studies we are asking that all 5th grade students subscribe to Time For Kids.  Please send in cash or a check for $5.00 made out to Time For Kids which will cover 24 issues throughout the entire year.

Please update your Membership Toolkit account by selecting “Wasserman” under Classroom Teacher.  This will allow me to communicate class events with you and post sign-up opportunities like Enrichment Days and Explore Labs.  You’ll also be able to access the school directory online.

I will be posting homework and important dates on our class blog calendar (link at the top of this page).  You can subscribe to our class blog in the right column so you can receive e-mails (just a few a month) when a new post is made.  This will be a great way to keep in touch with happenings in the classroom.

Please make sure your child has 3 spiral notebooks as an earlier supply list version said only 2 were needed.  You may send in a clipboard if you have one at home.  There’s no need to go out and buy a new one as I have some extras.  In addition, a chair pocket is optional.

Please have your child bring a chapter book to read by the second day of school.

Thank you!

Spring Enrichment- Friday, April 27

Dear Families,

Over the past month, each fifth grade class has taken the time to read the inspirational book, ‘A Long Walk to Water’.  This book details the journey of Salva Dut, a Sudanese boy who transitioned from being a refugee in a war torn country to becoming the mastermind behind an organization meant to better the lives of the Sudanese people.

After delving into this book and Salva Dut’s life, the students have been inspired to raise money for Salva’s organization:  Water for South Sudan (waterforsouthsudan.org).  This group raises money to build wells for the South Sudanese people, a people who must often walk for hours each day to obtain clean drinking water.  Building a well in a village is not just about having clean water for drinking and bathing.  With clean water nearby, villages can build hospitals, schools, and marketplaces.  If children no longer have to spend half of their waking hours obtaining water, they have the time to go to school and better their lives for the future.

The Nuckols Farm fifth graders want to help.  On April 27th, our plan is to have a walkathon to raise money for Water for South Sudan.  Students will collect monetary donations in advance from family and friends to sponsor the 30 minutes of walking they will do. Both cash and checks written to the Nuckols Farm PTA will be accepted.  On the day of our walkathon, each student will bring in their donations.   All of the money will then be donated to Water for South Sudan, with the hopes that our small effort will make a big difference in the lives of people across the ocean.

Pizza!

We’re gearing up for Papa John’s Teacher Delivery Night on Tuesday, March 6.  Monday, March 5 is the last day to place your order.  Our class is in a close competition with the other 5th grade classes to have the most orders.  You may place your order at www.pjrva.com/schools  Thank you for supporting Nuckols Farm!

Cool Beans!

Our classroom economic system is well under way.
We have LOTS of beans and are now ready to reap the
rewards!  We are now accepting donations for both our
classroom store and our future 5th grade auctions.
Donations for the classroom store may include: pens,
erasers, stickers, etc.  Donations for the auctions may
include: books, toys, games, gift cards, used items, etc.

Our class will have its own auction at the end of each
quarter.  The classroom store will be open
every few weeks.  Feel free to send in your donations at
any time throughout the year as the students are VERY
excited about spending their beans!

Henrico 21

Congratulations to Riley C., Allison, Sara Parks, Luke, and Collin. They have been selected to represent Nuckols Farm at Henrico 21, a county-wide event in May!  Their Stateopoly project was chosen from all the projects in the class.

Everyone in the class made a monopoly-like game on one of the regions of the country.  They did everything from researching important sites in their region, to creating the board, money, and community chest and chance cards.  They even designed and made the box itself.  They also designed all the game pieces on Tinkercad that were printed out on the 3D Printer.  It’s quite an accomplishment!  We’re looking forward to playing all the games soon.

The Henrico 21 event will be on May 24 at Glen Allen High School.  Stateopoly Game
