A veteran teacher of over 22 years, Tammy Hanna began her teaching career immediately after earning two degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University; a BFA in Dance and Choreography, and a BS in Health and Physical Education. Through the VCU Cohort Program, Ms. Hanna continued her pursuit for knowledge by earning her MS degree in Health and Movement Sciences in 2009.  As well as being a student, Ms. Hanna has been a teacher of students, teachers and future teachers. Through the Clinical Faculty program she has mentored 10 student teachers and countless practicum students.  Ms. Hanna has also broadened her educational reach by serving as an adjunct professor to the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Education, Teacher Prep program.  Her classes have served both future professionals in Health and Physical Education, and Elementary Education classroom teachers.  Ms. Hanna’s sense of efficacy and advocacy is the driving force to her involvement in multiple venues that support Health & Physical Education as well as Dance.

An active member of VAHPERD sense 1997, Ms. Hanna has served on the Board as VP of the Dance Division 2007-2010, and has been recognized twice as Virginia Dance Educator of the Year both in 2010 and 2017. She also enjoys presenting at professional conferences and collaborating with other educational specialists both in the field of Health & Physical Education and beyond. Her passion for unifying teachers in valuing and utilizing movement across the curriculum earned her the Henrico County Gilman Teacher of the Year award for Seven Pines Elementary 2015.  In addition to the special events that she develops and implements for her school, she frequently will provide dance clinics for other schools both in and out of her school system.  In the spring of 2017 Ms. Hanna collaborated with Kevin McGrath of “Adopt-A-Gym” to do their first ever Dance-A-Thon, raising enough money to help fund thousands of dollars in PE equipment for two schools in need.

In Ms. Hanna’s spare time, she enjoys volunteering to a local dance studio and traveling with her husband and friends. One trip at a time she hopes to cover all the bucket-list hot spots, and maybe one day even visit Machu Picchu.
