January 27 – 31, 2020

Next week is Kindness Week at Glen Allen!  Thanks so much to Mrs. Sitter for organizing this for our school.  It gives us a chance to consciously focus on the kind actions we do every day, and to recognize others for being the wonderful people they are.  Kindness Week Teacher 2020

Benchmark testing is going great!  Please continue to encourage your student to review all notes and PortaPortal links for the Math benchmark this week.  Also be sure that your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats a nutritious breakfast, and arrives at school on time on testing days as we will begin right at 8:00.

The parent window is open to enter your child’s electives for next year.  Please refer to the packet from Hungary Creek for details on how to access this site as well as the elective details.

We are gearing up for the 5th Grade Chorus performance, “Gotta Be Jazz,” in February. Mr. Mills has supplied the music for students to practice at home: Gotta Be Jazz. Enjoy!

MATH

The Probability and Statistics Test has been rescheduled for Wednesday, January 29th.  Your student has lots of notes in their notebooks that cover probability, tree diagrams, graphs, mean, median, mode, and range, and stem and leaf.  We will continue to review all previously taught skills to prepare for the Math Benchmark on Thursday, January 30th and Friday, January 31st.  You student should be using their notebooks each evening as they complete homework.  Weekly Math is due on Wednesday, January 29th.

We will also start learning about the Stock Market this week in order to play the Stock Market Game.  Students will work in teams to buy and sell stocks in order to earn money.  This is always a great activity!  Please feel free to add your knowledge and experience to this activity by teaching your student and giving hints about what to look for and what to buy.

LANGUAGE ARTS

This week we will focus on fact and opinion, author’s purpose, and media messages.  In Language, we will work with prepositions and prepositional phrases as well as using I and me correctly.  The fantasy book report is due on Friday, February 25th.  Please let me know if you have questions about this assignment.

SCIENCE

The students will be experimenting this week to decide if there Old Wives’ Tales are true or not.  They are have so much fun designing their experiments and are more than ready to get to it!  Your student may be bringing home a permission slip to participate in another student’s experiment.  Students that are eating anything will receive a permission slip.  Without a signed permission slip turned in, they will not be able to participate that day.  Your student may also ask to bring in supplies.  Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this assignment.  Next week we start our matter unit!

We will begin exploring the Northeast Region this week.  We will begin with learning the states and capitals of the region.  There will be a Quick Check Quiz on Thursday, February 6th.  This quiz will only require matching each state in the region with the correct capital.  We will also learn about the Northeast Region’s climate this week.
