Glance at a Golden week

Happy Friday families! What a rainy few days we have had…with no apparent end in sight! 🙁 We have been making the best of our indoor recess time with some great movement activities from GoNoodle.com, as well as playing some new games such as “7-Up, Heads Up” and “Four Corners”.

Here is what you can expect from the upcoming week in…

  • Reading– We will be continuing our study of the story Double Fudge. This week will have us looking at summarizing the most important events from each chapter using the “Somebody…Wanted…But…So…Then…” strategy. You can see an example of this in the picture below. You can practice this strategy of summarizing at home by having your child retell the important events after reading their homework book or other books around the home.

  • Math– We will continue practicing and learning strategies to solve double digit subtraction with regrouping problems. These pictures demonstrate one strategy that we have been using to help us solve these problems.
  1.  We draw the tens and ones for the first number in our problem.IMG_3448
  2. We look to see if we have enough ones to take away our second number. If not, we erase a ten and “break it down” into 10 ones. We recount our tens and ones and make our number sentence match our illustration. IMG_3450
  3. Once we have enough ones, we make “X’s” to represent the number being taken away. When finished we count to see how many ones and tens are left to get our answer. IMG_3451

Students will begin solving both double digit addition and subtraction problems in one activity making sure that we are paying close attention to the symbols (+ or -) that are in our number sentences as we work.

Be sure to continue to practice basic addition and subtraction facts at home. Knowing these basic facts will help your student be able to focus on the steps to solve each problem.

Additional review material can be found under the Math 2nd Grade Curriculum Websites tab.

  • Science– We will be wrapping up our unit on animal adaptations. Be sure to continue to review the important terms from the study guide that is one the back of the homework packet.

imagesOur weekly computer IA tests have returned. Students will take a Reading or Math test every other week that has been created by administration. These tests will cover material that has been covered up to this point in the year. The grades from these tests will be entered into the grade book. A copy of the test will come home for review if any student doesn’t pass. Next week students will be taking a Math IA.

Please make note of these important upcoming dates…

  • Friday, January 27th is a half day for students.
  • Monday, January 30th is a student holiday.
  • Tuesday, January 31st is the 2nd grade PTA performance.

Have a wonderful, dry weekend!
