week of 1/21

Dear families,
It has been a very different week of learning in our class community this week. We have had a very small class all week due to student illness. I appreciate your support keeping students at home until they have been symptom free for 24 hours! Mrs. Duffy and I will work our hardest to help students catch up on work they missed in class as well as send home assignments that we feel they can complete independently.
We had an exciting end to our day! Mr. Pattie, Mr. Weldon, and Miss Brown got the 2-5 grades pumped up for our benchmark testing for the end of the semester with a rowdy (and loud) assembly. Please talk to your child about the importance of always trying their best on tests, taking their time, showing their thinking, and checking back over their work. In third grade semester benchmarks are given over two days to reflect how the students will take SOL tests in the spring.

Next week in reading we will be reviewing for our reading benchmark with the students will take on Thursday and Friday. The test is cumulative which means it covers all the reading concepts that the students have been taught in third grade. Moby Max is a great resource for reading comprehension practice at home! The students can read passages and practice answering questions about what they read. In writing we will learn about homophones and continue to work on our animal research papers. In Math we will practice multiplication and division facts for 0,1,2,5, and 10. We will also continue to practice elapsed time to support our students who missed the unit this week. In science we will complete our unit on matter. The students will have a test on matter on Tuesday, January 28.
Upcoming events:
Saturday, January 18-PTO Spirit Night at Ashland Skateland 5:30-7:30 pm. Come out and support our Tigers!
Monday, January 20-NO School-Martin Luther King Jr. holiday
Thurs. and Friday, January 23-24-Reading benchmark
January 24-end of second nine weeks
Monday, January 27-no school for students
Thurs. and Friday, Feb. 6-7-Math benchmark

Week of 1/13

Dear Families,
It was wonderful to be back at school again with the students! We had a full week of learning how to make a “plot mountain” in reading, tell time, and explore life cycles of plants and animals in science. Ask your child which animal they chose to research for their writing, and what reference source they use to locate information!
Next week in reading we will be identifying main idea and details in nonfiction text, and summarizing information. In writing we will review prefixes and suffixes, and work on our animal research writing. In math we will continue to learn about time, focusing on elapsed time, how much time has passed for different real life activities. The students have a quiz on Friday on time. Please help them prepare at home by going over the time study guides in their math notebooks. These will come home with them Tuesday-Thursday to help them prepare. In science we will investigate matter.

A note from the school clinic: Parents– as a reminder, the following is the Henrico County Public Schools ill student policy. These measures are in place and must be followed to ensure a healthy learning environment for ALL students.
Students should not be in the school if they have the following:
· A fever of 100.4 degrees or greater before taking a fever-reducing medication.
· Vomiting or diarrhea because of illness
· An unknown rash or possible contagious condition (requires MD note before return)
· Are unable to focus due to: pain, chronic health condition and/ or acute illness
· Flu-like illness (with or without fever)- headache, fatigue, cough, aches, weakness, and sore throat.
A child should be free of symptoms of contagious disease (fever, vomiting, diarrhea, suspicious rash, etc.) for at least 24 hours before returning to school. If your child has been vomiting or having diarrhea, they should also be able to eat a full meal without any GI symptoms.
Pro tip: if your young child does not want to eat a meal- there’s a good chance they are sick. Pay attention to clues such as not eating, sleeping more than usual, or changes in mood/ behavior as these are usually signs that your child is ill.
Thank you for your support making sure we keep our classroom and school a healthy place to be.
Upcoming events:
Friday, January 17-Math quiz, time
Monday, January 20-Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday
Friday, January 24-end of second nine weeks

We will be writing summaries and learning about spelling endings and homographs in word study. I math we will learn about equivalent periods of time, review telling time to the five minutes, and time to the minute. If you have an analog clock at home you can help practice this skill by saying “time check” at random times and telling tie together. In science we will review life cycles of plants and animals.

We have read lots of fiction and nonfiction text and practiced asking and answering questions. The students enjoyed learning about interdependency in science using The Lorax and Wump World. In addition to learning we “wowed” the entire school with our winter performance on Thursday. Thank you so much to all of the families who attended in the evening as well! The students looked amazing in their festive holiday attire.

Today’s trip to the Science Museum of Virginia went very well. Please check class dojo to see pictures of your child learning science by doing!
Testing next week: the students will have their 4.5 quarter two summative tests in reading and math next week. On Tuesday they will take reading and on Friday they will take math. These tests are cumulative and cover all material taught so far this year. Look for student notebooks to come home to help them prepare for these important tests next week!
Monday, December 9 is a half day. We will be collaborating with first graders to make our designs for the Giving Market that will be held on Thursday, December 19. As a reminder dismissal begins at 10:50.
Winter Break is quickly approaching. Trevvett’s fabulous PTO has provided a sign up for families who wish to contribute to our Winter Party on December 20 at 1 pm. Since our class eats lunch at 12:15 the students do not need a lot of food for the party but we would love to play fun games! Please email me if you have any questions or concerns!

Next week in Reading we will use Thanksgiving stories to practice theme and different levels of questions. In writing we will complete our opinion paragraphs. In math we will continue our unit on measurement. With Thanksgiving baking this is a great time to get your child involved in real life measurement at home! At Trevvett on Tuesday, November 26 we will be having a “Measurement Mania” activity in the cafe. The students will rotate through five stations from 8-8:55 am. We would love some extra hands to keep the students on task! Please let me know if you would like to volunteer to help at a station on Tuesday!
On Thursday, December 5 the third grade will be performing for our PTO Waffle Supper. They will also perform at 8 am for the students. I am attaching the lyrics to the songs so that the students can practice at home, if possible. We have had a short amount of time to prepare for our performance and I want my Tigers to shine! Please consider staying for the waffle supper after our performance! The revenue benefits our PTO!
On Friday, December 6 the students will have a field trip to The Science Museum of Virginia. We will depart school at 9:30 am and return by 1:15 pm. Students will need to pack their lunch or get a lunch from the cafeteria.
