This summer, the VCU Graduate School is launching the Research and Mentoring (RAM) Opportunity, which serves local high school students who are interested in research. Students participate in a 2 week research project led by graduate school students across disciplines. Please see the attachment for more information.

Modeling a Rare Type of Muscular Dystrophy in Zebrafish

Project Description: The mentee will work to investigate the role of a particular gene in the onset of a congenital muscular dystrophy (MD). MDs cause severe muscle wasting and degeneration and leave patients unable to walk and perform normal daily activities. There is currently no cure for MD. The research will include collaboration with the Children’s Hospital of Richmond to model a pediatric patient’s disease and try to better understand the disease onset and pathology.

Social Studies Curriculum Possibilities for Women’s History and Gender

Project Description: This research project is designed to describe teacher perspectives on women’s history and gender in social studies curricula. For the RAM program, a high school student will help organize some data for an outside reviewer to look over and determine whether or not the researcher’s conclusions are trustworthy.
