MSIC Tank2Table Program

The Math Science Innovation Center is excited to offer Year 2 of “Tank2Table”, the MSiC aquaculture class for high school students.   The focus of the class will be the aquaculture of tilapia, trout, and oysters, covering everything from rearing techniques to cooking.  It will be very experience-oriented, with field trips to places such as oyster farms, aquaculture facilities, and the Richmond Culinary Center.  At the end of the class, 4 students will be offered a one-week internship at an oyster farm run by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) in Gloucester (July 10 – 14 and 17 – 21).  Other shadowing or intern opportunities may be available as well.

The program is looking for the following characteristics in participants:

  1. Existing sophomores, juniors, or seniors.
  2. Possess a good work ethic and are well-behaved
  3. Willing to commit to the two weeks of the course:  June 17 – 30.
  4. Willing to work with others in a collaborative environment.
  5. Interested in learning more about sustainable aquaculture and the organisms involved.
  6. Punctual with a good attendance record.
  7. Please Note:  Grades are NOT the deciding factor in student selection.  We want students who work hard and have a good attitude about learning, not necessarily the top students in the class.

Students who wish to participate should see Mrs. Walton in school counseling.
