Service Opportunity- National Railway Historical Society

The Old Dominion Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society is in need of student volunteers.  The society owns and operates the Richmond Railroad Museum at 102 Hull Street. The museum, which is dedicated to the history of Virginia’s railroads,  is open on weekends only with the hours being 11-4 on Saturdays and 1-4 on Sunday afternoon.  There are presently have openings for high school and college age volunteers to act as museum guides. The organization can offer community service hour credit to any high school student who may need these credits for graduation.  All required training and supervision is provided, and volunteers will be asked to work in a protected indoor environment where their activities will be under the direction of experienced museum staff.

To qualify, students should be honest, outgoing, reasonably articulate, and able to lead small groups of people through the museum’s galleries.

Promptness is also required since having ample guides present is necessary in order for the facility to open it’s doors each weekend.

The Richmond Railroad Museum houses thousands of artifacts relating to the railroad history of Central Virginia.  Students will not only benefit from the volunteer service hour credits offered, but those who are interested will have ample opportunity for learning about railroad history in the Commonwealth, a feature that may be of interest to students who intend to pursue history or transportation related degrees.

If interested, the museum’s contact information is posted on thier website at www.richmondrailroadmuseum.org
