Elko Middle School’s Counseling program is comprehensive in scope, developmental in nature, and focuses on the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students.
What does that mean?
Well, a few things:
- Comprehensive – we work with students across their range of experiences in middle school, preferably before they happen (prevention) but also when they happen (intervention) and after they happen (postvention).
- Developmental – what is appropriate for an 8th grader may not be so for a 6th grader. We take into account where the child is developmentally before introducing or discussing concepts, so they can better understand them.
- Academic, Career, and Personal/Social Development – School Counselors not only schedule students, review grades, and promote study skills, but also help students:
- explore possible careers, set career goals, and develop academic plans to get them the knowledge and skills needed to achieve their dreams
- learn to relate better with their peers, adults, and their world, so that they are more prepared for life’s challenges
