Week 2: 9/10-9/13

We had a great, although short, week this week! We are easing our way into full workshop model. I have seen huge improvements in stamina, participation, and class discussion. I am so proud of these kids and how far we have come in just two short weeks.

In fourth grade we started with our mini lessons on summarizing and practiced that. Looking forward, we will focus on determining the main idea. We will talk about how this looks a little different when looking at fiction versus non fiction text. We have also been talking about Virginia’s geography with a special look at it’s regions and rivers. Ask the kids about their prediction lesson with Mr. Clough! We learned to use Excel to make predictions, research, record accurate answers, and graph results! Next week we will continue our study of the regions as we dig a little deeper into each one.

In fifth grade we worked on making text connections and will continue with predictions next week. Students capped off the week reading their own books and making connections to the text as they read. We focused on three types of connections: text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world! Next week we will continue with making predictions about our reading and how our background knowledge (schema) and context clues can help us make predictions and inferences about the text. In social studies we will begin our focus on Henrico County geography. We will use Google Maps to explore the county and make predictions based on what we find!
