Week of March 25 – 29 / Have a great spring break!

It’s the final days before spring break!  If you know that your child will be missing any days this week, I would love to know ahead of time, so that I can plan ahead regarding any work that he or she might miss. This Friday, 3/29 is the last day of the nine weeks, so if you know your child will be absent, it will be helpful for your child to complete assignments/tests before being absent. Thank you so much for your help with this!

*Important Announcements*

*Early Release on Friday 3/29:  The school sent home a note about ordering a “Grab and Go” lunch this Friday 3/29.  Please send this form back as soon as possible if you would like to have your child bring home a Grab and Go for the half day of school.

*Career Day:  Career Day is this Thursday, 3/28!  Miss Walker has arranged a fabulous morning for the students!  Be sure to ask your child about the 3 different careers he or she learned about on Thursday.  What a great experience for the students!

*SPCA Donations:  Information was sent home last week about collecting needed items for the SPCA. Collection begins on Monday 3/25 and we will continue to collect items through Friday 3/29.  Thank you for your donations!

*Recorder Reminders:  Please remember that students should be practicing their recorder at home throughout the week. Your child has the Recorder Karate music in his or her Music Folder and should be practicing the next song in order to earn the next belt. As Mrs. Garcia explained in the letter sent home with recorders, you can record a video of your child performing a song and email it to her so that your child doesn’t have to “test” in music class.  Doing this really helps cut down on the testing line in class, and your child can do it in a much more relaxed environment at home.  Thank you for your support with this!

*The recorder concert will be on Tuesday, April 16th at 7:00 pm.  Please mark your calendars!  🙂

*MAP Assessments:  As a reminder, students will take the Reading MAP test on Thursday, April 18th and the Math MAP test on Wednesday, April 24th.  The students have been working on their growth skills in class, using both the Reading and Math sections of “My MAP Learning Path” on Study Island.  Thank you for encouraging your child to work on this at home also, if possible.

*Classroom Items Needed:  We have run out of tissues!  With allergy season upon us, we could really use some more boxes of tissues.  If you are able to donate some boxes, I would truly appreciate it.  Thanks!  Also, if you are able to, we could use some new Dollar Store prizes for our “Gotta Get It Card” drawings.  Thank you in advance if you are able to send in some items for our Friday drawings!

*What Are We Learning In Class?*

*Reading:

This week we will continue with the complex skill of inferences. We will work with non- fictional text this week. Students will complete a comprehension assessment on Wednesday 3/27.  During small group rotations, students will meet with me in our small group and we will continue our comprehension strategies using leveled texts.  Students will also read to self and work on their writing during rotations.

We will not do word study this week.

*Math:

We will finish our geometry unit this week.  On Monday we will learn about geometric solids, or 3-D shapes.  Students will analyze the characteristics of common 3d shapes, where we will learn about the number of faces, edges, and vertices on each solid.  Students will take the Geometry Test on Thursday, March 28th.

*Social Studies:

The class did a great job on their Civil War test last week.  It really was great to see how engaged and interested they were!  This week we will begin our next unit, which will be about the era of Reconstruction following the Civil War (VS.8).

*Science:

We will continue with our Ecosystems & Animals unit this week.  On Monday we will learn about adaptations.  We will learn about the differences between structural and behavioral adaptations.  We will discuss various examples of each on many different animals.  Make sure you child is able to discuss real-world examples of these adaptations.  Our class will take the Ecosystems & Animals Test on Wednesday, March 27th.

Have a FANTASTIC spring break, everyone!  🙂
