Track team heats up in cold temperatures

 by Tonisha Pitchford

Indoor track is not always run indoors. Sometimes the team runs outside in what the team calls “Polar Bear Meets.”

“The polar meets are really cold, and it’s crazy because you wouldn’t expect us to have to run outside because of the word ‘indoor,’”junior Dashawn Christian said.

When it does run indoors, the team has its meets at facilities like Arthur Ashe Recreation Center. Before facing competitors, Blue Devil runners warm up or listen to music to calm down.

“It’s not like basketball or football. It’s just you against other people. We use our competition as a drive to make us better and faster,” senior Karvonte Hundley said.

“When on the track, it’s all for one and one for all,” senior captain Tony Tate said.

Most of the team has been running since middle school.

“I ran track because I like to run, and I like the competition of it all,” Tony said.

The team practices after school from 4:30 to 5:30. Their practices consist of non-stop running to build endurance.

“Practice is a tough job because you have to make sure you are in shape and make sure you always stretch every day,” junior Chris Tucker said.

Runners have to make sure they are up on their game since indoor is the start for outdoor track.

“I stay in shape by running in my neighborhood. After I finish my homework, I can run for about an hour,” junior Kiara Charity said.
