Review: Sweet Sexy Savage

By Joi Bass

In her new album “SweetSexySavage,” R&B singer Kehlani is most definitely a “whole bookshelf of stories.”

One of Kehlani’s greatest strengths as an artist is the way she uses vulnerable moments from her past to create inspirational music that fans can relate to regarding love, life and humility.

With its versatile beat and sexy jazz tune, “Keep On” is the perfect way to introduce the album. In this song, Kehlani sings about a relationship in which she can always count on her partner to take her back no matter how many times she messes up.

She demonstrates some serious soul searching in “Piece of Mind.” She “can feel again/won’t be dumb again,” and her heart is on her side.

“Everything Is Yours” and “Escape” are about the strong and passionate love she has for another person and her willingness to give this person her all.

Kehlani’s voice is sweet and raspy as well as rich and soulful. Her voice comes to power in “Hold Me By the Heart.” This acoustic song leaves fans mesmerized not only by her voice but the message the song conveys: despite being “nothing short of broken” by our past experiences, the person we love the most can help us “fly again.”

Kehlani uses this album to empower women. For example, in “Personal” and “Too Much,” she sings of her confidence and pride in herself and refuses to let negative energy bring her down: “I got good heart, good soul/No stress/Don’t you run your mouth cause in this song I say it best.”

In this album, Kehlani shows fans that despite her past including overcoming adversity and gaining prosperity, she can always remain sweet with a hint of sexy and always savage.
