Alumna inspires artists

By Sarah Chapman and Mackenzie Rhinehardt

Talent, hard work and dedication have paid off for artist Amelia Langford, Class of 2008, who recently shared her educational and professional experiences with the sixth period class of art teacher Dawn Schwartz.

Mrs. Schwartz said that seeing Ms. Langford’s work inspired her students who were beginning a project in class.

“It’s always beneficial for students to see work, especially the work of alumni,” Mrs. Schwartz said.

Senior Justin Lewis said he had heard of Ms. Langford because Mrs. Schwartz talked about her a lot and showed her artwork. He liked it when Ms. Langford demonstrated her techniques.

“She would sketch something out with a normal pencil,” Justin said. “Then she’d come back with an outline. Then she’d lightly sketch, and then go back over it harder.”

Senior Kam’Ron Pickett said that Ms. Langford takes four to five weeks to finish one art piece, and he enjoyed seeing the results of that work.

“My favorite part of her visit was when she showed us one of her art pieces that has been around the world,” Kam’Ron said.

That also impressed senior Myles Spivey.

“It was the most influential part of her visit because it shows that any student from Varina could do anything they want to,” Myles said.

Ms. Langford has had over 40 exhibitions of her work. She has completed design work for companies such as Capital One, Bake My Day and Grow.

Although her focus is pen and ink, Ms. Langford considers herself “a woman of many hats.” She’s done bits and pieces of everything, from being a muralist to being a graphic designer.

Ms. Langford is also a clothes designer. She has her own clothing line called “The Hunt” where she puts some of her artwork on t-shirts.Recently, she illustrated “Might and Majesty: Baptism by Fire,” a book by Sean Mitchell.

“I am very happy with where I am and what I’m doing with my career right now,” Ms. Langford said. “I only see myself doing what I’m doing now.”
