Varina theater is stepping out of the wings with scripts from its own students.

“This fall we will stage a series of one acts written primarily by the students,” theater sponsor Gary Colletti said. Mr. Colletti also teaches World History and Geography II.

Seniors John Foster and Peregrine “Pippin” Covington are two of the playwrights. John’s one-act play is “Conspirators.”

“Well, I’m not going to tell you a lot, but it’s about pirates who kidnap the queen of England’s daughter,” John said.

Writers meet after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays to complete their plays. Pippin is involved in writing two plays.

“One of them is a collaboration between several writers, and another is one I’m just writing by myself,” Pippin said. “For the past couple of years, I’ve been writing plays with my friends, so co-writing a play is a lot easier than writing one by yourself.”

John returns for his fourth year in theater, and Pippin for his third.

“I’ve been a member since ninth grade, but I started my whole acting experience when I was little. Since then I’ve loved being somebody else,” John said.

Pippin’s involvement in theater also started at a young age.

“My first play was in fourth grade, [and] it was the play about the fairies who fixed the shoes. I was the one who wanted the running shoes,” Pippin said.
