Review: “Trophy Wife”

“Trophy Wife” is a comedy for the whole family. The craziness in the Harrison’s jumbled, blended family brings laughter as it shows the experience of being a family. While the premiere episode is almost too fast paced, it manages to fulfill the overall concept of the show.

The former party girl Kate (Malin Akerman) finds herself in an odd situation when she falls for Pete Harrison (Bradley Whitford) who has three stepchildren and two ex-wives. Diana (Marcia Gay Harden) is the first ex-wife, a successful doctor and strict mother of teenage twins Hillary (Bailee Madison) and Warren (Ryan Scott Lee). Jackie (Michaela Watkins) is the second ex-wife, an overly comforting mother to adopted son Bert (Albert Tsai). The plot of “Trophy Wife” differs from other family-based shows on television today. Viewers often see the role of the new stepmom adjusting to parenthood, but never has a show taken on the idea of handling the husband’s ex-wives. Akerman definitely knows the role of trophy wife since she has performed in comedies such as “27 Dresses” and “The Proposal.”

Kate’s new life is far from normal. She goes from being a single party girl to a relaxed but concerned stepmother at a parent-teacher conference. Watching Kate’s life spin in a 360-degree circle is amusing but rushed. Director Jason Moore tries to fit a lot into the first 30-minute episode.

Watching the ex-wives and kids react to the father introducing his young “trophy wife” would have been just enough for a premiere episode. On the other hand, it was also good to see what type of mother Kate would be. So far she is not the typical parent on ABC, but there is nothing wrong with creating something new. “Trophy Wife” has the potential to become a hit comedy show and last for many seasons if the production team stays on track and takes their time to tell the story.
