The Lady Blue Devils are playing Henrico. It is the first quarter of the last home game, and friends and family on the home side erupt with screams and excitement as senior power forward and center Ashley Logan scores a layup to reach 1,000 points in her high school career.
The game is interrupted to recognize Ashley’s achievement and to award her the game ball. She is the first Blue Devil in five years to score 1,000 points.
“I feel honored, but the people that got it before me I look up to, so hopefully someone would look up to me in the future,” Ashley said.
Some of her teammates already look up to Ashley.
“I’ve been looking up to her ever since middle school, so I felt great. It made me want to work harder by seeing her get those 1,000 points,” junior forward Quanisha Bruce said.
At 5’10”, Ashley is one of the tallest players on the team. She has been playing basketball for 13 years, and this is her fourth year on varsity.
During the season, she practices three hours daily. The team practices Monday through Saturday for two hours, and Ashley practices an extra hour at home with her father.
Head Coach Kevin Burke has seen Ashley up her game every year.
“In her freshman year she only scored about 90 points the whole season. Last year she scored over 340 points,” Coach Burke said. “I like to call her a silent killer because she doesn’t say much but will definitely hurt you on the floor, defensively and offensively.”
Assistant coach Quentin Moore talked about coaching Ashley to reach the 1,000-point mark.
“I pushed her. I told her not to give up, and I made sure she knew how to do most of the basic moves to make her get the baskets,” Coach Moore said.
Ashley plans to continue her basketball career at college, and Coach Moore thinks she can go even further to the WNBA.
