Column: Traveling provides chance to see world

by Samantha Siewert

From a young age, many of us learn about the exquisite places in the world: New York City, Chicago, Paris, London and Rome. Pictures, stories and movies all point to beautiful things happening in beautiful places, but many of us don’t get the chance to travel there. Domestic trips are expensive; trips out of the country, even more pricey.

That doesn’t mean that travel is impossible thanks to school programs offering trips to New York and European countries like Spain. According to the Student and Youth Travel Association, the top ten international destinations for youth travel are China, Peru, Brazil, Australia, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Greece. Scholastic travel is expensive, but it is less costly than travel for the average tourist.

Exploring the world is more than a way to get out of the house: it is a way to experience a different culture, adventure into an unfamiliar place and try new things. From a young age, my family took my sister and me many places including a 10-day trip to Germany. The memories are irreplaceable, and to put it plainly, I’m hooked on travel: the sights, the food, the shopping and the interactions with other people.

If you feel the itch to travel, talk to your parents about going on a trip that could be a great experience for the family. Traveling isn’t just about visiting a relative; it’s a chance to expand your understanding of other people and other places.
