JV team becomes family on baseball field

by Megan Flournoy

The JV baseball team (10-8) ended its season with games against Hanover and Highland Springs.

The Blue Devils scored their ninth win of the season against Henrico (16-4). Other victories were against Meadowbrook, Highland Springs, Henrico, Glen Allen, Armstrong and Byrd.

The team consists mostly of freshmen, but sophomore captains Michael Props and Troy Fiorillo contribute a lot to the team.

“Michael tries to step up and help everybody, and tell them what they’re doing wrong to help them fix it,” Troy said. “We’re captains because we’re returnees, and we have good leadership.”

Most of the team has been playing together since recreation baseball. Growing up together gives them a sense of family.

“This team has been playing together since rookie ball [8 year olds] and is a good squad. Hopefully they continue to grow,” Toni Bowles said. Mrs. Bowles is the mother of freshman Jonathan Bowles.

Director of student activities Kevin Adams said, “Familiarity and trust can improve a team.  A lack of trust can hurt a team.”

The team has done well this season, but some of the parents see room for improvement.

“I expect the team to be more of a whole unit, one team instead of 16 individuals.  Much like the Musketeers: ‘All for one and one for all,’” said parent Jennifer Rivera, who is an instructional assistant at Elko Middle School.

Both JV coaches are in their first season with the team: choir teacher Steven Ryan and English teacher Joel Nuckols.

Coach Ryan played college baseball, and Coach Nuckols previously coached a JV team for two years and a middle school team for three years.

“Since they are both first-year coaches for the team, Coach Nuckols and Coach Ryan are doing a great job,” Coach Adams said.

The future of the team seems to be bright.

“Hopefully they will continue to grow and solidify more as a team and as individuals,” Michael’s mom Karen Props said.
