Column: ‘Bromances’ live on

by Danielle Childress

One of the senior superlatives is cutest couple, and every year, the class wonders if the couple will stay together through college or work or long distances. But what about the bromances? We all know ‘em. The boys of a bromantic relationship are best friends who are always together, speaking a language of their own that doesn’t quite make sense to anybody else. They have inside jokes that nobody else even begins to understand.

On television, they are J.D and Turk of “Scrubs,” the interracial couple that never cuts out the bro-level PDA, or Vinny and Pauly D of “Jersey Shore,” the pair with a deep love who talk little about their feelings for one another. On the screen, bromances last through it all. But will they in real life? With so many pressures and stresses and opportunities after graduation, who’s to know? What if Mark meets a better bro than Austin when he goes off to college? What if the distance between the two drives them apart?

Most bromances have nothing to fear. They are more likely to stand the test of time than a typical relationship. One man can be in more than one bromance at a time; generally, they are not exclusive. Also, the inner workings of a bromance are different than those of an actual relationship. When the members of a bromantic relationship are apart for an extended period of time, there may be sadness, but they can come together again and pick up right where they left off. Whether the boys go to the same school next year or are miles and miles apart, the bond between the two is stronger than any hurdle the future can throw between them. In no time, they will be reunited, frolicking through the imaginary field of flowers.

The relationships of the Vinny’s and Pauly D’s of Varina High School may have a good chance of lasting longer than the class’s cutest couple.
