Varsity boys tennis team setting up for success

by Brandon Ingram

After a tough season, varsity boys tennis (0-12) is working to recruit new players and improve their tennis game before next season.

The team has inexperienced players who joined the team to try a sport that many others don’t go for.

“I wanted to try something different and gain a new experience at a different sport,” senior William Wright said.

The five-player team faces stiff competition against the top district teams like Hanover and Atlee.

“A lot of our guys don’t play tennis for a main sport, so when we go against teams that have players that are more experienced, it’s hard for us to win,” junior Mitchell Johnson said.

Players have been trying to recruit people to make the team better, but most don’t have as much enthusiasm or interest in the game as the players.

“It’s a great game to play, and once you get the hang of it, it’s fun and enjoyable,” senior Sean Matthews said.

The team’s practices are focused on fundamentals of the game.

“If players take more time on their tennis game, I think we can be pretty good,” Mitchell said.  “Our first win will come if we continue to work hard and practice like we want to win.”
