Editorial: School dress code issues

Abiding by the dress code is simple; however, many students have a problem following it when it comes to ripped jeans, pencil skirts, leggings, fishnet stockings and yoga pants, among other things. School is a place to learn, not to show off the latest trends.

While some students believe they should be able to wear whatever they like to school, they are the very students who make a dress code necessary. Other students believe the dress code is too strict, but not following the dress code is a distraction to the learning environment. Not only can the clothes be distracting, but also teachers often have to stop class to ask a student to change clothes or to send them to an administrator.

The administration tried to combat the dress code problem this spring by holding a special meeting for girls in the auditorium. The meeting was not to target female students or make them uncomfortable. Instead, administrators said they were trying to clear up any questions or concerns about the dress code as we approached the warm weather season.

There is no problem with looking good for school. Students just need to wear clothes that are not too revealing and follow the rules. They need to keep in mind that the way they dress impacts how others perceive them. Wearing pants down to the ankles or showing midriff does not improve anyone’s educational experience.

School should be treated more like a job than a dance party. Students should dress in an appropriate way to learn.
