Column: Teens battle for jobs

 by Ashanti Wright

It’s that time of year. Prepare yourself. The struggle is real. Dust off your crossbows, guns and spears. Ready your weapons for the summer job hunt when competition for minimum wage is at its bloodiest.

During the summer, everyone feels happy, which causes purse strings to loosen. People buy more stuff, eat more food and travel to places they’ve never seen, so employers need employees to keep up with the demand.

Thanks to the economy, many adults are encroaching into teen job territory. Adults are pursuing lower paying jobs because those jobs are the only jobs they can find.

War starts. Friends betray friends. Resumes are stolen. Dress clothes are sabotaged.

A quarter of teens 16-19 years old can’t find work. According to Michael Saltsman, a researcher at the Employment Policies Institute, teen employment has fallen in areas like retail or sales, while the number of people age 55 and older working in those sectors has risen.

To make matters worse, experts say teens who can’t find jobs may be heading down the dead end path of unemployment.

“Teens who have a spell of unemployment now run a greater risk of being unemployed in the future, a greater risk of earning lower wages down the line and of dropping out of high school,” Mr. Saltsman said.

Great, another problem affecting our future. Teenagers are falling under the poverty line because their jobs are being snatched away. They end up digging themselves into debt and continuing to be dependent on their parents

Employers favor applicants who have previously held jobs. How can teenagers acquire job experience when no one will hire them?

Rise up, my friends. Stop fighting against each other, and let us combine our forces to attack our common enemy: the adults. They take our jobs. They ruin the economy. They give us curfews. We shall not tolerate this oppression any longer. If conditions do not improve, the future will be bleak for the future leaders of America.
