Editorial: Varina promotes diversity

The idea to celebrate African-American history originated in 1926 as “Negro History Week,” which has now grown into Black History Month. Varina High School did an excellent job with its activities and programs that honored African-American history during February.

For the fourth consecutive year, the PTSA organized the Celebration of African-American Heritage. The year’s program, “There is a King in You,” included music and dance performances and student presentations. Winners of the annual Black History Month essay received recognition during the program.

Other school activities included the library’s daily bingo game. The game educated students about the accomplishments of notable African-Americans.

Varina is doing its students and the community a service by honoring African-Americans and their achievements. Because 65% of the school population is black, black history is an essential part of the community. Students, parents, teachers and administration should be applauded for embracing and encouraging diversity within the school.

Varina has a mixture of rich and diverse cultures. Honoring African-American heritage contributes to making our school a culturally enriching place for education.
