Student section makes comeback for winter season

Fans in the Blue Devils’ Pit are cheering on their team and having some fun for themselves.

“It’s more students; you feel the excitement of the students in the section. You feel more connected to the student body,” junior Joy Jefferson said.

The Blue Devils’ Pit resulted from initiatives to increase school spirit by senior class sponsor Emily Stains, class representatives and athletic booster Angelique Tate.

“The Blue Devils’ Pit is the student cheering section. We are trying to create an area where fans can keep the athletes excited during the game,” Ms. Stains said.

An earlier attempt to create a pit during football season was unsuccessful.

“I think the pit fell apart earlier in the year because most students were too busy to support it because they were either in band or playing football,” senior Danielle Smith said.

Ms. Stains decided to give the pit a second try during basketball season, and so far it has done much better.

“I think it has had a really great start, but it is only as great as they make it,” Ms. Stains said.

Incentives to participate in the pit include free wristbands, t-shirts and rally towels.

“Whoever shows the most pride gets the free stuff,” senior spirit commissioner Tony Tate said.

The Blue Devils’ Pit has affected senior shooting guard Trey Harrison.

“It feels like the team has doubled in size with the support,” Trey said.

In the future, Ms. Stains would like the Chick-fil-A Cow to throw sandwiches and Subway coupons into the pit. She would also like people in the pit to learn cheers with cheerleaders and participate in a halftime game where a blindfolded student shoots a basket.

Tony said the pit participants are having an impact on the opponents.

“The Blue Devils’ Pit as a unit is virtually unstoppable, and we’re going to let the opposing team know we’re in it to win it,” Tony said.
