Review: Mission Impossible V

by Krsti Sharma

Fifteen years after the release of the first “Mission Impossible” film, Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt in the franchise’s fourth motion picture. Highly anticipated, “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” quickly became the highest-grossing film in the Mission Impossible series—and for good reason. “MI4” deftly combines action and humor for maximum entertainment.

The Impossible Missions Force agency is accused of bombing the Kremlin and is shut down. Ethan and his IMF teammates Jane Carter (Paula Patton), William Brandt (Jeremy Renner) and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) are out to find the person responsible for the bombing, a madman called Cobalt who plans to start a nuclear war. Cobalt believes a war would begin the next stage of human evolution with only the strong surviving.

“Ghost Protocol” keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The most thrilling scene from the movie is when Ethan climbs the Burji Khalifa in Dubai, the world’s tallest skyscraper.

The acting in “Ghost Protocol” is solid and convincing. Simon Pegg as the bumbling Benji provides comic relief and prevents “MI4” from imitating the unrelieved, drawn-out action scenes in most thrillers these days.

“Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” is a fun, fast-paced thriller. It is a great comeback for Cruise whose last film, “Knight and Day,” wasn’t up to par. In “MI4,” Cruise scales the outside of the Burji Khalifa without the use of a stunt double; at the age of 49, he is still showing fans what he’s got. The film is rated PG 13.
