The varsity volleyball team has some athletes with fresh faces who tried out to condition for another sport or to keep busy but grew to like the sport enough to make it part of their lives.
“It was just something to do. But now I like it because it’s fun. I get to learn different stuff and play another sport other than basketball. It also helps keep me in shape for basketball and track,” senior Donald Churchwell, who plays back-middle, strong side and weak side said.
Senior front strong side player Kendall Durham said, “Let me put it this way. A lot of us all came out thinking that volleyball was just some easy laid back sport we could all play. Once we really started playing, we realized that it took hard work and practice and dedication. So all the ones who came out for fun ended up getting better at the game, and now they actually enjoy it.”
Junior back middle Jesse Barks and senior middle hitter George Moody began playing because they needed something to do to pass the time. Both came to the sport not knowing anything about it; now they want to continue in the sport.
Junior libero Travis Shupe is a three-year veteran of the sport. He said that some newcomers had the mindset that volleyball was just a lot of “hitting a ball around for fun,” but they soon realized volleyball was a serious sport.
Senior outside hitter/backup setter Jacob Hudson said that this year’s new team members will help the volleyball in the future.
“Since the majority of them are freshmen, they have a lot of time to gain more experience and the volleyball tem to its full potential,” Jacob said.
