Lady Blue Devils make statement

By Katie Carns

The varsity girls volleyball team is growing and improving, even though the team’s record may not show it.

With new head coach Christine Suders, the team has performed significantly better than last season. The Lady Blue Devils are well on their way to reforming the team’s reputation.

“I think that our record doesn’t show our growth and development,” Coach Suders said. “The players’ skills and knowledge of the game have grown so much since I saw them at August tryouts.”

Coach Suders said the team is getting harder to beat and other district teams are noticing.

“I absolutely think Varina is becoming a big challenge,” she said. “Several coaches from other schools and the JV coach say that we are growing, and we have surprised many, many schools.”

Junior captain libero Kelly McCune said their new head coach is the reason for the team’s recent growth.

“[Coach Suders] believes that we can be better volleyball players, and she is always willing to help you improve,” Kelly said.

Junior middle hitter Ieisha Monroe said fans are even following the team more closely than usual.

“Last year around this time, no one cared about Varina’s volleyball team, but now people are kind of interested in our team.” Ieisha said.

Even though the volleyball team has improved, Coach Suders said fan support could help lift the bar even higher.

“I think that volleyball has a reputation of not being a strongly supported sport, and it’s hard to be an athlete not supported by your school,” Coach Suders said.

Senior right side hitter Amanda Marshall is confident the team will continue to improve.

“We know what we need to focus on and work on, so we might have more close games and maybe actually win some,” Amanda said.
