The varsity football team (5-1) is on track to surpass last season’s 6-5 record.
The Blue Devil’s only loss was to Hermitage. During this loss, Varina was missing three offensive players including junior starting quarterback Brandon Wood. In Varina’s five wins, they have scored an average of 30 more points than the opponent.
Their first game and win was against Dinwiddie High School (40-14).
“It felt good, but we knew we were going to win, so we looked forward to the next game,” senior right offensive and defensive tackle Tyrell Chavis said.
In the second game Varina hosted Thomas Dale at home. The score was tied at half time, but Varina was the only team to score in the second half (17-10).
The third game against Hermitage was played on a muddy, wet field. The Blue Devils only scored a safety (14-2).
“Even though we have only lost one game, some people think we have lost the Blue Devil touch, but we are determined to prove that wrong,” sophomore receiver Donovan Dowling said.
The second home game and third victory for Varina was against inter-conference rival Lee Davis (48-12).
“I think if we come mentally prepared more often, we’ll win more games like that,” senior linebacker Christian Best said. “We had a good week of practicing that really helped.”
During the Homecoming game against Armstrong, Varina played a powerful offensive game with a score of 56-16. Junior quarterback Miquan Bland said their success resulted from “working hard every day, staying focused, conditioning, taking care of our bodies, lifting weights, knowing routines, studying film and doing our job on the field.”
Varina scored yet another victory against undefeated Atlee High School with its largest winning margin (54-11).
In its last four games of the season, the Blue Devils defeated Henrico (42-7), Glen Allen (54-7) and Hanover (42-3); they lost to Highland Springs (12-7).
