Review: Suburgatory

 By Kristen Ellis

ABC’s new comedy “Suburgatory” teeters between being hilarious and trying too hard.

Tessa Altman (Jane Levy) and her dad George (Jeremy Sisto) move from Manhattan to the suburbs after George finds condoms in Tessa’s room, which in itself is stupid. It’s not like kids in the suburbs don’t have sex. They aren’t perfect angels. Ridiculousness ensues immediately.

While Tessa endures school, George meets a business associate at the local pool where a woman is so absorbed in texting she falls into the pool. George’s acquaintance tells him that it happens all the time, and “because of the implants, no one drowns.” After leaving the pool, George meets Dallas Royce (ADD actor’s name), “the mall queen,” and Dalia’s mom (ADD actress’s name). As a sort of initiation, Dallas takes Tessa shopping after school, a trip that is hilarious and a little pathetic.

In the dressing room, Tessa and Dalia are basically twins in hideous pink shirts and shorts, and they both look ridiculous. Then Dallas says “off the chizzy,” which by itself is bad enough.

Pink is used too much in the show. Also, people are not always stuck in their phones texting, so that’s just unreal. Not that many teenagers would have plastic surgery either. The show makes suburbia seem like a Barbie-doll land, a place of great mother-and-daughter bonds, an abundance of girls in pink, perfect teenagers, families with both parents married and plastic parts on every woman.

“Suburgatory” is similar to an amped up version of “Mean Girls,” but perhaps not as relevant. Too much of anything will send viewers over the edge and make it annoying.
