3D Imaginary Characters

Teacher(s) Name: Mrs. Brower

School: MS – Tuckahoe

Grade Level(s): Grade 8

Content Area(s): Art

Lesson Summary

This lesson took paper drawings to a 3D reality! Students learned about different sketching techniques and used their creative knowledge to sketch imaginary characters in their sketchbooks. Knowledge was reinforced about the elements of art, value and form, by shading their characters to make them look three-dimensional. Once they completed the drawings, they chose the one that they liked the most, thinking about a special power it may have and/or a story that could be told about it. They learned about a program called Tinkercad and used it to create their characters in a three-dimensional form. While the characters were being printed, they created and wrote a short story about it, explaining what its name is, who it is, where it lives, what special powers it has, and anything else they cared to share about the character’s life. We had a reveal in the library; each 3D character was covered with a tissue and one-by-one we unveiled them. The students were extremely excited about creating their 3D characters and loved seeing what started out as a character in their imaginations turn into a 3 dimensional reality.

TIPC Ratings

Research & Information Fluency

Rating:Not Observed – Explanation: This was not a focus of this lesson.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students worked collaboratively on google docs to create stories that reflected their 3D characters unique superhero abilities, through the use of google docs they were able to provide each other with feedback and suggestions on how to make their characters’ abilities unique.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students worked applied digital tools to solve the authentic task of taking their sketchbook drawing of a character and turning it into a 3D design on Tinkercad. Students had to critically think about their design and the elements that could be re-created from their 2 dimensional sketch into a 3D design.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students had to synthesize their designs and figure out what risks they could take in designing it in a 3 dimensional venue. They had to be willing to fail and try again if the design was unable to be printed based on design, thus allowing students to reflect upon their work and use creativity to find an authentic solution.
