Lesson Summary

The Ebola virus is one of world’s deadliest diseases and is almost impossible to stop. This activity is designed to generate a broad overview of the virus using information from the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization.

In this lesson, students will read The Hot Zone and then work in groups to create annotation designs. The groups will use the software of their choice to combine the necessary elements into one document that meets all of the criteria for a working annotation journal. Then the group will download the shared Ebola Virus Google doc template and decide as a group how best the gather the required information listed. The goal is to identify areas where the CDC and WHO may have conflicting ideas or contrasting solutions.

Next, each student will use his/her smartphone to take a picture of the QR code placed around the room which is linked to a Google doc/Google earth activity which will track each street name entered. They are to share the picture of the QR with any student they come into close contact with and have that student enter his/her street name and city. The sheet is imported into a Google Map to show how quickly a virus can spread.

TIPC Ratings

Research & Information Fluency

Rating:Developing – Explanation: The students set up and finalized their annotation templates using Word, a Google doc, or any other software or platform. All group members names were on the document and it was dropped into the Schoology drop box They also had to investigate the eBola virus.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students had to decide as a group how to divide and conquer the tasks. They must work from one Google doc and everyone must participate. All communication occured either face-to-face, or collaboratively using the Google Suite and Schoology.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Developing – Explanation: Students had to identify areas where the CDC and WHO may have conflicting ideas or contrasting solutions.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Developing – Explanation: Using the QR code to a Google Form to collect addresses was a creative and innovative method of data collection. The data collected was then imported into a Google Map to give a visual display of how widespread the virus could be in a short amount of time.
