Creating Compounds

Teacher(s) Name: Mrs. Beam

School: Longan ES

Grade Level(s): Grade 5

Content Area(s): Science

Lesson Summary

Students conducted research on an element of their choice from the periodic table. Then students were paired up based on the element that they researched and worked with another student or two to form a compound out of their elements. For example, the students researching hydrogen and oxygen worked together to create the compound for water, H2O. Students designed and labeled 3D models of their compounds using Tinkercad.

TIPC Ratings

Research & Information Fluency

Rating:Approaching – Explanation: Students selected the most appropriate digital tools and information sources to learn more about the atoms and compounds they were building. They used information collected to design and build their 3D model of their compound.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Developing – Explanation: After their initial research on an atom of their choice, students worked in partner pairs or groups to research, design, and build their compounds. Students used Google Classroom to share their designs and comment on each others work.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students had to think critically as they worked to build their compounds within Tinkercad. There was quite a bit of problem solving among the groups as they worked to connect the shapes together and label their compounds. Each group took a different approach to their compound designs and had an opportunity to reflect on how the final print turned out and what they would do differently next time.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students created meaningful, original compunds within the assignment parameters.
