Lesson Summary

Many Americans have devoted their lives to service within their community and the equal treatment of all people. As citizens of the United States, it is our responsibility to practice good citizenship and volunteer. This Project-Based Learning fuses in depth research and the development of respect for people who have devoted their lives to defend American principles and serve others. It encourages and motivates the individual to understand, recognize, and continue those same principles and spirit of service.

Research & Information Fluency

Rating:Ideal – Explanation: The students constructed their own questions to guide their research and were able to choose which digital tools to use for the display of their information. The students synthesized the information that they gathered to create presentations and a Google Site to share information with the public. The students also encouraged the public to continue the legacy using the famous Americans as an example to do good for others in their community by participating in the Kaechele Kindness Fun Walk Team to help raise money for cancer research. Throughout the lesson the teacher acted as a guide and facilitator.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Throughout the lesson, the students communicated and collaborated over Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Drive, and Google Sites. The use of these tools allowed the students to collaborate with one another regardless of time or distance. At the conclusion of the lesson, the students reflected on their roles as communicators.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: The students generated their own research questions to help guide their research and had to not only make decisions throughout the process, but also had to justify their decision making. The students chose the most appropriate digital tools to help facilitate their learning.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: The students really took the guidelines of the project and ran with them. The students went above and beyond. The students and teacher took risks in order to learn new technology tools such as Google Sites. The students completely designed and published their classroom Google Site to share their project with a wide audience, they even challenged the public to take the next step and do something positive just like the Famous Americans from their studies.
